Where To See The Grey Squirrel
The grey squirrel can be found in most woodland places throughout the UK. Locally, I see them a lot at the parks, such as Pennington Flash, Pennington Park and Rivington. If you live rural or semi-rural and have a bird feeder in your garden, you will likely find the Eastern grey squirrel is a regular visitor.
If they’re used to human beings, don’t be surprised if they’ll actually come to you to beg for food! I’ve seen many a squirrel approach tourists at Green Park in London in the hope of a tasty bite to eat!

About the Grey Squirrel
Although grey squirrels are North America’s native squirrel species, many people don’t understand that these fuzzy rodents are not native to England (where they are common in parks and gardens). In fact, the grey squirrel is considered an invasive species in England, where it was introduced from America in the 19th century.
In North America, the largest populations of grey squirrels are found in Canada, where they are a keystone species and even considered by some to be more important than the beaver. The term “keystone species” refers to a predator that influences the populations of other species.
Grey squirrels have been living among us for over 100 years now, but it’s still surprising to see them in urban areas, where they’ve become so bold that they often eat out of people’s hands.
Grey Squirrels are much larger and hardier animals than their red counterparts, which is why the population of the red squirrel is threatened by the appearance of the grey squirrel in their territory. Grey Squirrels out-compete the reds for food and can also withstand harsher environments, making them more adaptable for the changing landscape in the UK.
Grey squirrels can also carry squirrelpox which our native red squirrels can die from which is why grey squirrels are seen as an invasive species.
